How Does Bolstie Work? It all Start With How You Pack Your Clothes

This Packing Technique Is Mind-Blowing

To maximize Bolstie’s effectiveness in relieving neck pain while seated—whether on a plane or elsewhere—you first need to master a more efficient way to pack. Forget what you’ve learned and seen before - no need to waste money packing cubes or any organization nonsense. The method I’m about to share is simple, fast, and incredibly effective. You’ll wish you had known it sooner, but it’s never too late to start.  Practice a few times and you’ll be traveling like a pro. Overpackers - you are going to love this!

I call it the Bolstie Packing Method. This technique ensures your clothes are packed in a way that optimizes both storage and support. Bolstie holds three compact bundled rolls of your clothes , and the key is NOT to overstuff them. To help you get started, let’s go step by step using items most people already have in their wardrobe:

3 T-shirts

1 lightweight pair of joggers

1 pair of underwear

1 pair of socks

Step 1: Folding

Lay out two of the three T-shirts. Fold the sleeves and sides inward so that the width from edge to edge measures 10.5 inches. This method applies to button-down shirts, light hoodies, and dresses as well.

Step 2: Stacking

Stack the two folded T-shirts on top of each other. Next, fold the joggers in half and place them on top of the T-shirts. Fold the jogger legs upward to match the length of the tops. Finally, place the underwear and socks on top.

Step 3: Rolling

This step requires a bit of effort, but it’s worth it. Roll the entire stack as tightly as possible, starting from the pants waistband. Roll slowly and firmly to create a compact bundle.

To secure everything, we modify the Ranger (Army) Roll technique:

1-Take the 3rd T-shirt and fold the hem outward by 6 inches (traditional Ranger Rolls use only 2 inches).

2-Fold one side inward so that the width measures 9.5 inches—one inch smaller than your rolled bundle.

3-Place the rolled bundle at the neckline end of the 3rd T-shirt and roll it up tightly.

4-When you reach the folded hem, stretch it over the entire roll, sealing everything inside—nothing shifts, and even your socks stay in place.

Each completed roll should measure approximately 10-10.5 inches in length and 15-15.5 inches in circumference—the optimal size for support and comfort.

Packing Bolstie

Repeat this process to create two more rolls, then pack them into Bolstie in this order:

1. First roll at the top

2. Second roll at the bottom

3. Third roll in the middle

Zipping should be effortless—if you have to force it, your rolls are too large. Remove an item or two and try again. Once packed correctly, Bolstie should stand upright on its own. If there’s extra space at the ends of the middle roll, fill the gaps with smaller items like more socks or underwear.

This method allows you to carry 27 mix-and-match outfits:

9 T-shirts × 3 pants = 27 outfits
